The production of Fallout has attracted significant attention this year, exemplifying the trend of successful adaptations from video games to screen. This resurgence of quality adaptations has been notable, despite the occasional lackluster effort. A tremendous amount of detail was required to transform the Wasteland into a realistic setting, but according to make-up artist Michael Harvey, one character presented notable difficulties.
In a conversation with PC Gamer, Harvey explained that Lucy, portrayed by Ella Purnell, was at the center of two key challenges. These issues were not related to Purnell as an individual, but rather to the extensive work required from the make-up team to achieve the desired look.
Harvey highlighted that many may not realize how heavily tattooed Ella Purnell is. She is adorned with tattoos from head to toe, which caused complications during her scenes, especially in the first episode where she appears in a wedding dress. "For a month, I devoted time each day to covering her tattoos. Anytime her vault suit was shown, I was back at it," said Harvey.
Additionally, extra work was added when the decision was made to depict her finger as being severed and replaced by a corpse's finger in the fourth episode. "It was quite a task; daily, I had to repaint her finger to maintain continuity," remarked Harvey. "As she interacted with props or washed her hands, I constantly had to touch up the paint."
As this injury remains unresolved, Season 2 is likely to require Harvey to repeat the finger painting process. Despite these challenges, his work significantly contributes to the immersive experience that Amazon's adaptation provides, and it underscores one of the many intricate reasons contributing to the show's popularity.
