Francis Ford Coppola's latest endeavor has not fared well at the box office. The film, a retelling of a Roman tale as a contemporary American sci-fi, directed and produced by Coppola and featuring Adam Driver, has experienced a disappointing debut.

Megalopolis has opened to a mere $4 million in the U.S. box office. This figure pales in comparison to leading films of the year, with titles like Deadpool & Wolverine earning $211 million domestically, and Inside Out 2 generating $155 million. Even the poorly received Crow remake managed to rake in $4.6 million, while the Borderlands adaptation, despite its challenges, attracted $8.8 million in its opening weekend across the U.S. and Canada.

The circumstances become increasingly critical when reflecting on the film's substantial $120 million budget. Though Megalopolis still has weeks remaining in theaters, it is likely to fall significantly short of breaking even.

As noted by market researcher David A. Gross, this creation represents an ambitious personal vision. He noted that occasionally, films of this nature can surpass expectations and achieve great financial success, but in this case, it appears to be struggling significantly, leading to likely substantial financial losses.

The film landed in sixth place overall, following titles such as The Wild Robot, which dominated with $35 million, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, taking second at $16 million. Other competitors included Transformers One at $9.3 million, the Telugu-language film Devara: Part 1 at $6.7 million, and Speak No Evil, which amassed $4.3 million.

Recently, a trailer for Megalopolis was removed from online circulation after it was revealed that some of the review quotes featured were fabricated. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival not long ago this year to a mixed reception, receiving a commendable rating from some, with one reviewer expressing that Megalopolis stands out as a deeply personal artistic vision, characterized by elaborate metaphors that ultimately lead to stunning transformations.
